Overview

5A Smart Charger for Mobility Scooters and Powerchairs

The 5A Smart Charger is a replacement battery charger for compatible mobility scooters and powerchairs using supported gel or lead-acid battery systems. It runs from a standard 240V mains supply and delivers a 5 amp charging output, making it suitable for many mobility devices where that charge rate is approved.

A replacement charger needs to match more than the plug shape. Battery chemistry, battery-pack voltage, connector, polarity and permitted charging current all need to be compatible with the scooter or powerchair before use.

What Does a 5A Charger Suit?

A 5 amp charger is commonly used with medium-size mobility battery packs where a steady charging rate is preferred. It can be a good replacement option when the original charger is also rated around 5A, but the electrical specifications should always be checked rather than choosing by appearance alone.

If your mobility device originally came with a different charge rate, use the charger recommended for that battery system. A higher-amp charger is not automatically better and may be unsuitable for some batteries or controllers.

Smart Charging and Cooling

The charger manages the charging cycle automatically rather than applying one uncontrolled fixed current throughout the entire charge. A built-in cooling fan helps manage heat while the charger is operating.

As with any mobility battery charger, keep it in a dry, ventilated area during use and do not operate it if the case, lead or connector is damaged.

Key Features

  • 5 amp charging output.
  • 240V mains input.
  • Designed for compatible gel and lead-acid battery systems.
  • Smart charging function manages the charging cycle.
  • Fan-cooled design.
  • Suitable for compatible mobility scooters and powerchairs.
  • Useful as a replacement charger where the electrical specification matches.
  • Available to ship NZ-wide.

Check Compatibility Before Ordering

Confirm the battery chemistry, battery-pack voltage, connector, polarity and permitted charging current for the scooter or powerchair. A charger should not be selected only by its amp rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the charging output?

The charger is rated at 5 amps.

What mains input does it use?

The charger is designed for 240V mains input.

Which battery types is it designed for?

It is intended for compatible gel and lead-acid battery systems.

Can it charge lithium batteries?

Do not use it with lithium batteries unless the device and battery documentation specifically approves this charger. This listing is for gel and lead-acid systems.

Will it fit every mobility scooter?

No. Charger connector, battery-pack voltage, polarity and charge specification vary between models.

Can it be used on a powerchair?

Yes, where the powerchair's battery system and charging specification match the charger.

What is the difference between the 5A and 8A versions?

The main difference is charging current: 5 amps versus 8 amps. Use the rate specified for the battery system rather than assuming higher is better.

Does it have a cooling fan?

Yes. The charger uses fan cooling.

What does smart charging do?

It manages stages of the charging cycle automatically instead of applying an uncontrolled fixed charge continuously.

What should I check on my existing charger?

Compare battery chemistry, battery-pack voltage, output current, connector and polarity with the replacement charger.

Can I use it if the plug looks similar?

Not on appearance alone. Electrical specifications and polarity must also match.

What if the charger or cable is damaged?

Do not use damaged charging equipment. Replace or have it inspected appropriately.

Can it be shipped throughout New Zealand?

Yes. The 5A Smart Charger is available to ship NZ-wide.

AA Mobility Care Membership
Yellow Auto Centre building with AA Motoring branding under a blue sky.

AA Mobility Care Membership provides peace of mind with comprehensive cover for your mobility equipment.

Every mobility scooter purchased via MoveSmart Mobility Equipment now comes with a 3 year AA Mobility Care Membership!

Where a nominated mobility scooter has become immobile, the AA will attend and, and if they are unable to mobilise the scooter, they will either:

Deliver the owner to their home address and arrange for the mobility scooter to be delivered to the owner's home address as soon as practicable or, if the owner wishes to remain with the mobility scooter, the AA will arrange for recover of both the mobility scooter and the owner to the owner's home address by means of a taxi van. This service is free of charge to the owner, as the cost of the taxi is charged back to the AA.

The AA will not attend any mobility scooter that is immobile at the owner's home address which requires repairs to be carried out.

Mobility Van or Taxi Assistance

Within metropolitan areas only, where mobility vans are available, the AA will make all necessary arrangements to ensure both the owner and their mobility scooter are transported to the owner's home address (or an alternative address as specified by the owner at the time, providing that the distance to the alternative address is no greater than to the home address).

In order for the AA to provide service, the owner must remain with the mobility scooter until the AA Service Provider arrives.
