Description
icare VersaFlo3™ Mattress System – Hybrid Alternating-Air Pressure Care
The icare VersaFlo3™ Mattress System is a powered hybrid support surface for users whose pressure-care needs go beyond a conventional static foam mattress. It combines a stable XP Support anti-bottom-out foundation, adjustable alternating-air cylinders and an ActiveX™ comfort layer so the surface can change pressure over time while still retaining the familiar comfort and support of foam.
The pump can operate in 5, 10, 15 or 20-minute alternating cycles or in a continuous static mode. Air pressure and comfort settings can be adjusted to the user rather than relying on one fixed mattress feel. A CPR rapid-deflation release is built in for emergency use, and the quiet pump is designed to minimise disturbance during sleep.
iCare classifies VersaFlo3™ for Very High Risk pressure-care needs with a Variable Feel. The MoveSmart configuration lists a manufacturer user-weight range of 20–140 kg and a 200 mm mattress height. The waterproof Zerotec™ medical cover, anti-slip base and Contour-Latch™ system support hygiene and secure use on compatible adjustable or profiling beds.

When Should VersaFlo3™ Be Considered Instead of a Foam Mattress?
VersaFlo3™ is not simply a softer or more expensive version of the IC or M-Line mattresses. Its key difference is dynamic alternating pressure: the air cells change support over time rather than providing one static surface. That can make it appropriate when the user’s pressure-care plan calls for a dynamic system.
For many users, an appropriate ActiveX™ or M-Line foam mattress will remain the simpler solution because it has no pump, tubing or powered settings to manage. VersaFlo3™ should therefore be chosen because the user benefits from active pressure redistribution—not just because its manufacturer risk category is higher.
Selection of a dynamic mattress should take into account skin condition, mobility, ability to reposition, body weight, care environment, continence, transfer technique, power reliability and the clinical pressure-management plan. Where needs are complex, involve the appropriate occupational therapist, nurse or other treating clinician.
How the Three-Layer System Works
- ActiveX™ comfort layer: provides surface comfort, immersion and pressure redistribution.
- Adjustable air cylinders: form the dynamic core and alternate pressure according to the selected cycle and settings.
- XP Support foundation: provides structure beneath the air cells, helps prevent bottoming out and allows the mattress to profile with an adjustable bed.

Everyday Use and Care Considerations
Unlike a static mattress, VersaFlo3™ depends on its pump and air system being correctly connected and set up. The pump should remain positioned where airflow is not obstructed, tubing should be checked for kinks or disconnection, and the user should not be left on an incorrectly inflated surface.
Caregivers should understand the selected settings and the purpose of the CPR release. The waterproof cover should be cleaned according to iCare’s instructions and checked for damage. A dynamic mattress still requires appropriate repositioning, skin monitoring and other elements of the user’s pressure-care plan.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of mattress is VersaFlo3™?
It is a hybrid pressure-care system combining an ActiveX™ comfort layer, alternating-air cylinders and an XP Support foam foundation.
How is VersaFlo3™ different from the IC15, IC20, IC25 and IC30?
The IC mattresses are static foam pressure-care surfaces. VersaFlo3™ actively changes air-cell pressure over time using a powered pump.
How is it different from the M1, M2 and M3?
The M-Line mattresses are also static foam medical mattresses with waterproof Zerotec™ covers. VersaFlo3™ adds a powered dynamic alternating-air core.
Who is VersaFlo3™ most likely to suit?
It is intended for users with more complex or Very High Risk pressure-care needs where a dynamic support surface is considered appropriate as part of the care plan.
Does the Very High Risk category mean everyone at high risk should use it?
No. A dynamic mattress should be selected according to the individual user’s clinical needs, mobility, skin condition and care environment rather than the label alone.
What alternating cycle times are available?
The pump can run 5, 10, 15 or 20-minute alternating cycles.
Can it run without alternating?
Yes. A static mode is available for continuous non-alternating support when appropriate.
Can the firmness be adjusted?
The system provides adjustable air pressure and comfort settings, so support can be tailored rather than remaining at one fixed feel.
What does the ActiveX™ layer do?
It provides the primary comfort surface above the air cylinders and contributes to immersion and pressure redistribution.
What does the XP Support layer do?
It forms the mattress foundation, helps prevent bottoming out and supports profiling on an adjustable bed.
What is the CPR release?
It allows the mattress to deflate rapidly when emergency access is required. Caregivers should know its location and purpose before an emergency occurs.
Is the pump noisy?
iCare describes the pump as quiet and designed to minimise sleep disruption.
What user-weight range is listed?
The MoveSmart configuration lists a 20–140 kg manufacturer user-weight range.
How thick is the mattress?
The system is approximately 200 mm high.
Is the cover waterproof?
Yes. VersaFlo3™ uses a Zerotec™ waterproof washable medical cover.
Can it be used on an adjustable bed?
Yes. It is designed for compatible adjustable and profiling beds and uses Contour-Latch™ for secure positioning.
What happens if an air cell is damaged?
iCare supplies a repair kit and states that the mattress can be repaired up to five times before replacement may be required.
Does a dynamic mattress remove the need for repositioning and skin checks?
No. The support surface is only one part of pressure management. Follow the individual care plan for repositioning, skin inspection and other measures.
What sizes does MoveSmart offer?
Long Single, King Single, Long Double and Queen are currently listed.
What warranty is included?
The VersaFlo3™ Mattress System includes a 2-year limited warranty, subject to iCare’s warranty terms.
Is the icare VersaFlo3™ Mattress System available for delivery across New Zealand?
Yes. The icare VersaFlo3™ Mattress System is available for delivery throughout New Zealand.
