icare VersaFlo3™ Mattress System – Hybrid Alternating-Air Pressure Care

The icare VersaFlo3™ Mattress System is a powered hybrid support surface for users whose pressure-care needs go beyond a conventional static foam mattress. It combines a stable XP Support anti-bottom-out foundation, adjustable alternating-air cylinders and an ActiveX™ comfort layer so the surface can change pressure over time while still retaining the familiar comfort and support of foam.

The pump can operate in 5, 10, 15 or 20-minute alternating cycles or in a continuous static mode. Air pressure and comfort settings can be adjusted to the user rather than relying on one fixed mattress feel. A CPR rapid-deflation release is built in for emergency use, and the quiet pump is designed to minimise disturbance during sleep.

iCare classifies VersaFlo3™ for Very High Risk pressure-care needs with a Variable Feel. The MoveSmart configuration lists a manufacturer user-weight range of 20–140 kg and a 200 mm mattress height. The waterproof Zerotec™ medical cover, anti-slip base and Contour-Latch™ system support hygiene and secure use on compatible adjustable or profiling beds.

When Should VersaFlo3™ Be Considered Instead of a Foam Mattress?

VersaFlo3™ is not simply a softer or more expensive version of the IC or M-Line mattresses. Its key difference is dynamic alternating pressure: the air cells change support over time rather than providing one static surface. That can make it appropriate when the user’s pressure-care plan calls for a dynamic system.

For many users, an appropriate ActiveX™ or M-Line foam mattress will remain the simpler solution because it has no pump, tubing or powered settings to manage. VersaFlo3™ should therefore be chosen because the user benefits from active pressure redistribution—not just because its manufacturer risk category is higher.

Selection of a dynamic mattress should take into account skin condition, mobility, ability to reposition, body weight, care environment, continence, transfer technique, power reliability and the clinical pressure-management plan. Where needs are complex, involve the appropriate occupational therapist, nurse or other treating clinician.

Everyday Use and Care Considerations

Unlike a static mattress, VersaFlo3™ depends on its pump and air system being correctly connected and set up. The pump should remain positioned where airflow is not obstructed, tubing should be checked for kinks or disconnection, and the user should not be left on an incorrectly inflated surface.

Caregivers should understand the selected settings and the purpose of the CPR release. The waterproof cover should be cleaned according to iCare’s instructions and checked for damage. A dynamic mattress still requires appropriate repositioning, skin monitoring and other elements of the user’s pressure-care plan.
