Overview

13 kg Carbon Fibre Folding Travel Scooter for Easy Transport

The STERLING S50 Carbon is a premium four-wheel folding travel scooter designed around one of the biggest challenges with portable mobility: getting the scooter into and out of a vehicle without turning every trip into a lifting exercise.

Its 100% carbon fibre frame keeps the published transport weight to just 13 kg once the removable 1.9 kg battery is taken out. Unlike a dismantling scooter, the S50 folds as one complete unit in two simple steps, so there are no separate chassis sections to carry or reassemble before driving.

A dedicated hard-shell travel case is also available for the S50 Carbon, with a tough moulded outer shell, shaped internal foam and retaining straps designed to hold the folded scooter securely in place during transport. For frequent travellers, that purpose-built protection is a significant advantage over relying on a generic scooter bag. View the S50 Carbon Travel Case.

Despite its low transport weight, the S50 is not stripped back to the bare minimum. It includes integrated LED lighting, Turn Assist, key-fob activation, an angle-adjustable tiller, a roomy foot platform, a 50 mm seat cushion and a removable lithium battery with up to 19.2 km stated range.

Where the S50 Carbon Fits in the MoveSmart Travel Scooter Range

The S50 Carbon sits at the ultra-light end of MoveSmart's folding scooter range. It is lighter to lift than the Pride GoGo Carbon, while the Pride offers the higher maximum user weight. Both are one-piece carbon-fibre folding scooters designed around vehicle transport and air-travel practicality.

Compared with the Merits Yoga, the S50 is much lighter to handle and does not need to be broken into separate sections. The Yoga remains useful for people who prefer a more conventional scooter layout and do not mind the additional weight.

Choose the S50 when the lifting weight, folding simplicity and ability to roll the scooter like luggage matter more than maximum user capacity or rough-terrain performance.

Two-Step Folding with No Dismantling

Preparing the S50 for transport is straightforward. First the seat folds flat. The tiller then lowers and the handlebars locate into the folded position. The seat cushion stays with the scooter, so there are no loose seat sections to carry separately.

Integrated grab points on either side of the seat frame provide balanced lifting positions. Removing the 1.9 kg battery before lifting brings the published transport weight down to 13 kg.

For short distances around airports, hotels, garages or car parks, the folded scooter can also be tilted using the front carry handle and rolled on its rear anti-tip wheels like a suitcase. That reduces the need to carry it every time it needs to be moved.

Compact Size Without a Cramped Driving Position

Many folding scooters save space by narrowing the foot area or bringing the front structure close to the rider. The S50 uses a raised chassis layout that leaves a larger, flatter foot platform, giving more room to position the feet and legs naturally.

The steering column is angle-adjustable. Changing the tiller angle alters the effective handle position and reach, but the handlebars do not have a separate telescoping height adjustment. A mid-stem release lever makes the angle adjustment easier to reach, while the gas-strut design helps hold the chosen position firmly.

The scooter is approximately 53 cm wide and 103 cm long. Removing the armrests for storage can reduce the width to around 43.5 cm, which can be useful with tighter vehicle boots or storage spaces.

Everyday Driving, Turn Assist and LED Lighting

The S50 is built to do more than move between a car boot and an airport terminal. A maximum speed of 6 km/h, up to 19.2 km stated range and compact 53 cm width suit shopping centres, footpaths, indoor public spaces and everyday community use.

Turn Assist gently reduces speed as the steering angle increases, helping the scooter feel more settled through corners. The system works in the background, so there is no separate mode to manage while driving.

Front and rear LED lighting improve visibility in lower-light conditions. The rear light also reacts to braking, acceleration and deceleration, giving people behind the scooter a clearer indication of changes in speed.

Simple Controls and Key-Fob Start

The control system uses a simple wig-wag paddle for forward and reverse movement, with large buttons positioned around the display. The scooter starts by bringing the supplied key fob close to the control box and pressing the start button, avoiding a conventional ignition key.

This layout keeps everyday operation simple while providing a secure way to prevent the scooter being activated without the fob.

Comfort for Longer Travel Days

The S50 uses a 50 mm seat cushion for more padding than many ultra-light folding scooters. A curved backrest supports a more natural seated position, while breathable spacer fabric helps reduce heat build-up on warmer days.

The open foot platform and angle-adjustable tiller are particularly useful for taller users or anyone who needs a little more room through the knees and hips than a very compact travel scooter normally provides.

Removable Lithium Battery and Air-Travel Practicality

A removable 24V 12Ah lithium-ion battery provides up to 19.2 km stated range and weighs approximately 1.9 kg. The battery can be removed for charging or transport, so the scooter itself does not always need to be positioned beside a power outlet.

The battery is UN38.3 tested and designed with commercial air transport in mind. Airline acceptance is never automatic, however. Each carrier can apply its own rules for powered mobility devices and lithium batteries, so approval should be confirmed with the airline before booking or travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the S50 Carbon best suited to?

It suits people who prioritise a very low lifting weight, simple one-piece folding and easy vehicle transport, while still wanting a scooter that is comfortable enough for everyday shopping and community use.

How much does the S50 Carbon weigh?

The published transport weight is 13 kg with the battery removed. That figure also excludes the seat cushion, armrests, storage bag and wheel trim kit.

How much does the battery weigh?

The removable lithium battery weighs approximately 1.9 kg.

Does the scooter dismantle?

No. It folds as one complete unit rather than splitting into separate chassis sections.

How does the folding process work?

The seat folds first, then the tiller lowers and locks into the folded position. The seat cushion remains with the scooter.

Can it be rolled when folded?

Yes. The folded scooter can be tilted from the front carry handle and rolled on the rear anti-tip wheels like luggage.

What is the maximum user weight?

The maximum user weight is 120 kg.

What is the maximum speed?

The maximum speed is 6 km/h.

How far can it travel on one charge?

The stated maximum range is up to 19.2 km. Actual range varies with rider weight, terrain, gradients, temperature, driving style and battery condition.

What is Turn Assist?

Turn Assist automatically moderates speed as the steering angle increases, helping the scooter feel more controlled through tighter corners.

Does it have lights?

Yes. Front and rear LED lighting is integrated into the scooter. The rear light also reacts to braking, acceleration and deceleration.

How is the scooter started?

A key fob is held close to the control box and the start button is pressed. This replaces a conventional ignition key.

Can the tiller be adjusted?

Yes. The steering column angle can be adjusted to change the effective handle position and reach. The handlebars do not have a separate telescoping height adjustment.

How compact is it when folded?

Folded dimensions are approximately 103 cm long × 53 cm wide × 35 cm high.

Can it be made narrower for storage?

Yes. Removing the armrests can reduce the storage width to approximately 43.5 cm.

What is the ground clearance?

Ground clearance is approximately 4 cm.

What size obstacles can it climb?

The stated obstacle-climbing capability is up to approximately 4 cm.

Can the battery be charged away from the scooter?

Yes. The battery is removable and can be charged separately from the scooter.

Can it travel on an aircraft?

The lithium battery is UN38.3 tested, but airline approval is still required. Confirm the scooter and battery directly with the airline before travel.

What surfaces is the S50 suited to?

It is best suited to indoor environments, shopping areas, formed footpaths and smooth outdoor surfaces. Its low weight and 4 cm ground clearance make it less suitable for rough terrain than a full-size outdoor scooter.

How does it compare with the Pride GoGo Carbon?

The S50 is lighter to lift, while the Pride GoGo Carbon supports a higher maximum user weight. Both use carbon-fibre construction and one-piece folding, so the better fit depends on whether minimum lifting weight or higher capacity matters more.
