Overview

Theorem Mercer Power Lift Recliner Chair

The Theorem Mercer is a compact power lift recliner for people who want the flexibility of independent powered positioning without moving to one of the larger chairs in the Theorem range. It combines powered lift assistance with separate adjustment of the backrest, legrest, headrest and lumbar support, allowing the chair to be tailored to different activities throughout the day.

The Mercer is particularly appealing where room size and overall chair footprint matter. Its Petite and Standard versions are both relatively compact compared with larger full-size recliners, while an extended footrest provides additional lower-leg support when the chair is reclined.

MoveSmart offers the Mercer in Petite and Standard sizes and in two Badlands upholstery colours: Saddle and Eclipse. The Petite is rated to 136 kg, while the larger Standard is rated to 158.7 kg.

Flexible Powered Positioning

The Mercer allows the backrest and legrest to be adjusted separately, with additional powered control of the headrest and lumbar area. This makes it possible to create a more upright position for reading or conversation, raise the legs while keeping the torso relatively upright, or recline further for resting.

The powered headrest is especially useful when the backrest is reclined because the head and neck position can then be adjusted independently. Likewise, the powered lumbar support changes the amount of support through the lower-back area without requiring loose cushions or manual repositioning.

Compact Without Being Basic

The Mercer's smaller overall dimensions are one of its defining features. The Petite measures approximately 81.2 cm wide and 96.5 cm deep, while the Standard measures approximately 86.4 cm wide and 104 cm deep. This can make it easier to fit into living rooms where a larger lift chair would dominate the available space.

Compact dimensions do not mean the seating is identical between sizes. The Petite has a 45.7 cm seat width and depth, while the Standard increases to 50.8 cm wide and 54.6 cm deep. Matching the chair to the user is therefore more important than simply choosing the smaller version to save space.

Extended Footrest

The Mercer includes an extended footrest designed to provide more support under the lower legs when reclined. This is a useful feature for taller users or anyone who finds a short conventional recliner footrest leaves too much of the lower leg unsupported.

As with all lift recliners, the room should allow enough space for the chair to complete its recline and lift movements safely without contacting nearby furniture or walls.

Key Features

  • Independent powered positioning for the backrest, legrest, headrest and lumbar support.
  • Powered lift function to assist the transition from sitting toward standing.
  • Extended footrest for additional lower-leg support.
  • Power-adjustable headrest.
  • Power lumbar support.
  • USB hand control.
  • Compact overall dimensions compared with larger Theorem models.
  • Available in Petite and Standard sizes.
  • Badlands Saddle and Badlands Eclipse upholstery options.

Choosing the Right Mercer Size

The Petite has a lower, narrower and shallower seating position. Its 45.7 cm seat-to-floor height, 45.7 cm seat width and 45.7 cm seat depth may suit someone who finds a conventional full-size recliner too deep or too high.

The Standard gives more room through the seat, increasing to 50.8 cm wide and 54.6 cm deep, while retaining a relatively modest overall footprint. Its maximum user weight also increases from 136 kg to 158.7 kg.

If you are unsure which size is likely to fit best, compare the measurements below with a chair that is already comfortable, or contact MoveSmart and we can help you work through the options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mercer a dual-motor or quad-motor chair?

The complete chair provides four powered adjustment functions: backrest, legrest, headrest and lumbar support. Some older material describes the lift/recline mechanism as dual motor, but the current MoveSmart configuration is best understood as a four-function powered recliner overall.

Can I raise the legrest without fully reclining the backrest?

Yes. Independent adjustment allows the legrest and backrest to be positioned separately, which gives more flexibility than a basic recliner where both sections move together.

What does the extended footrest do?

It provides additional support beneath the lower legs when the chair is reclined, which can be especially useful for users who find a conventional footrest too short.

What sizes are available?

MoveSmart currently offers Petite and Standard. The Petite has a 45.7 cm wide seat and is rated to 136 kg; the Standard has a 50.8 cm wide seat and is rated to 158.7 kg.

How do I choose between Petite and Standard?

Compare seat width, depth and seat-to-floor height. The Petite is lower and shallower, while the Standard provides more room and a higher maximum user weight.

What colours are available?

The current options are Badlands Saddle, a warm brown tone, and Badlands Eclipse, a dark charcoal/black tone.

Does the Mercer have lumbar and headrest adjustment?

Yes. Both the lumbar support and headrest are powered and can be adjusted independently of the backrest and legrest.

How is the chair controlled?

The Mercer uses a wired USB hand control for the powered seating and lift functions.

Is the Mercer suitable for a smaller room?

It is one of the more compact chairs in the Theorem range, but you still need enough space for the chair to lift and recline safely. Check the overall dimensions below against the intended room before purchase.

How much clearance should I allow?

Allow enough space behind and around the chair for its full recline and lift movement without contacting walls, side tables or other furniture.

Can the Mercer be used as a replacement for a medical bed?

No. It is a power lift recliner for sitting and resting. If a medical bed, prescribed sleep position or clinical pressure-care setup is required, use equipment selected for that purpose.

What are the maximum user weights?

The Petite is rated to 136 kg and the Standard to 158.7 kg.

Is the Theorem Mercer available for delivery across New Zealand?
