The ferrule is one of the most important wear parts on a walking stick: it provides the contact surface between the cane and the ground. Replacing a worn, hardened or loose tip can restore tread and help the stick perform as intended.

Choosing the Correct Size Matters

A replacement ferrule needs to fit the shaft snugly. Measure the outside diameter of the walking-stick shaft where the ferrule fits, or measure the inside of the old ferrule if it has retained its original shape.

NOTE:  in MOST circumstances, a 19 mm ferrule would be the normal size for most aluminium walking sticks in New Zealand.

When Should a Ferrule Be Replaced?

A worn ferrule can reduce grip and may also change the way the stick sits on the ground. Waiting until the rubber has worn through can expose the cane shaft and damage both the walking aid and flooring.

Simple Push-Fit Replacement

Remove the old ferrule and clean the end of the shaft before fitting the new one. The correctly sized replacement should push on firmly and remain secure during normal use.

Do not force an undersized ferrule onto a shaft or rely on a loose oversized tip. Adhesive is normally unnecessary with a properly sized push-fit ferrule unless the walking-stick manufacturer specifically recommends otherwise.
