How to Choose the Right Lift Chair Size: Seat Width, Depth and Height

The best lift chair is not simply the one with the highest weight capacity or the widest seat. Seat width, seat depth and seat-to-floor height all affect how well the chair supports the user and how useful the powered lift movement feels when standing up.

A chair can be beautifully made and packed with motors, yet still be a poor choice if the user cannot sit fully back, their feet do not reach a secure position, or the seat is so wide that it provides little lateral support.

The three lift-chair measurements to check first

1. Seat width

Seat width is generally measured across the usable seating area between the armrests. The chair needs enough width for comfortable clothing and movement without squeezing the hips or thighs.

More width is not always better. An excessively wide chair can leave the user poorly centred and make the armrests less useful when repositioning or preparing to stand.

2. Seat depth

Seat depth is the distance from the front of the seat to the backrest. The user should be able to sit back against the chair while the seat supports the thighs without pressing firmly into the back of the knees.

This is one of the most commonly overlooked measurements. A chair that is too deep can cause the user to slide forward or sit away from the backrest simply to get their feet into a comfortable position.

3. Seat-to-floor height

Seat height affects foot placement and the transition to standing. When sitting upright, the feet should be able to reach an appropriate, stable position rather than dangling above the floor.

Notice that the higher-capacity Goldfern Heavy Duty chair is wider but actually has a slightly lower seat height than the standard Goldfern. Likewise, Theorem Petite and Standard sizes change depth as well as width. Choosing only by weight rating would miss those differences.

What if you need more width but not more depth?
