Which Mobility Scooter Is Better for Hills and Rougher New Zealand Terrain?

For hills, gravel, grass and rougher outdoor routes, a mobility scooter needs more than a large motor.

The most useful features to consider together are:

climbing capability, ground clearance, tyre size and type, suspension, braking, stability, battery capacity and the actual surface being travelled on.

A scooter that performs well on a smooth incline may behave very differently on the same gradient when the surface is wet, loose or uneven.

These figures are useful for comparison, but a published maximum or climbing grade should not be treated as a target operating angle.

Real-world safe performance depends on the total load, surface, tyre condition, battery condition, approach angle and many other factors.

Motor power matters—but it is not everything

More powerful motors can provide greater torque for demanding terrain.

Why ground clearance matters

Low-clearance travel scooters are ideal for smooth indoor floors and paved areas but can bottom out on:

  • rough grass;

On patched footpaths, rural driveways, gravel or uneven outdoor paths, suspension can have a major effect on comfort and control.
